3. Hanuman Temple Jakhu
There is a famous temple of lord Hanuman built on a hilltop in the heart of Shimla, this temple is an important pilgrimage spot for Hindus. The temple features a life-size statue of Hanuman and is also one of the most popular sunset viewpoints around. The steps leading up to the temple are lined with shops that sell snacks, drinks and souvenirs. The mythological story behind Jakhoo Temple describes Ram’s younger brother Lakshmana becoming unconscious after being injured by a powerful arrow during the battle of Ramayana. There was no hope to revive Him despite several attempts. Then, he was told by a renowned priest that he needed a particular herb called Sanjeevani. It was Hanuman’s responsibility to obtain the herb from the Himalayas.
It was on the way to the Himalayas that he met sage Yaaku. Hanuman sat on the mountain and clarified his doubts about the herb. After gathering sufficient information about the herb, he promised Yaaku that he would meet him while he was heading back to Lanka.
All that said, on his way back he was approached by a demon called Kalnemi who tried to deceive him, but because that took up so much of his time, he didn’t meet up with the sage, and so to get to Lanka on time he chose to take the fastest route possible. After the disappointment set in, he remembered the last thing he could do, so he met with him in person to tell him why he broke the promise. Seeing Hanuman leave the spot, Yaaku built a temple on the hill to honour the Lord’s visit. According to legend, the temple has Hanuman’s footprints, and the monkeys that live around the shrine are his descendants.
